Coheed and Cambria bassist Michael Todd was arraigned Monday (July 11) in a Massachusetts court, one day after he was arrested for allegedly robbing a Walgreens pharmacy just hours before his band was set to open a show for Soundgarden.
Todd appeared in Attleboro District Court, where the charges against him — armed robbery and unlawful possession of prescription narcotics — were officially read. Judge Daniel O'Shea also increased Todd's bail from $10,000 to $25,000 cash, citing the musician's out-of-state addresses and past record, which includes a previous conviction for drug possession and an arrest for reckless driving.
According to Attleboro's Sun Chronicle, assistant district attorney Mark Donovan requested Todd's bail be raised to $100,000 cash, but local attorney Sandra Ferreira, who represented Todd at the bail hearing, pleaded that the amount remain at $10,000, arguing that he lives in New York state with his parents, has relatives in Cape Cod and would appear in court as required. Attleboro police said he had originally given them an Anaheim, California, address for his primary residence.
Todd is being held on the $25,000 bond and is due back in court to answer the charges against him on August 9. Messages left for Ferreira were not responded to by press time.
Todd was arrested Sunday afternoon allegedly entering a Walgreens, showing a pharmacist a BlackBerry note that said he had a bomb and demanding OxyContin. He was given six bottles of the prescription painkiller and hopped into a cab bound for the Comcast Center in nearby Mansfield, Massachusetts, where Coheed and Cambria were set to open for reunited grunge gods Soundgarden. He was then taken into custody after being identified by the cab driver and the pharmacist via security-camera footage taken from inside the store.
Coheed played their Sunday night set with multi-instrumentalist Wes Styles filling in for Todd on bass, and later wrote on their website that they planned to continue the tour without him.
